ANALYSIS:

A large keeper, Herman was looked as a key prospect in high school attending Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, Washington and named to both the ESPN and Adidas High School All-American teams. He played club soccer with the Crossfire Premier U-16 team in 2008-2009 playing in nine games and then moved to the Sounders Academy where he played 22 games for their U18 USSDA club.

Ryan chose to attend Santa Clara, but after redshirting his freshman season he chose to transfer to Washington. When signing Huskies coach Bobby Clark said “Ryan was one of the best high school goalkeepers in the nation his senior year. He has great combination of size, athleticism and soft hands. His experience with both the Sounders and the youth national teams has given him the experience to be ready to help us.” Although he was the second behind current Whitecaps II keeper Spencer Richey.

Herman didn’t make his career start for Washington in 2013 with Richey hurt and at the time of his graduation played just 41 NCAA Division 1 games although achieved 18 shutouts in those games and was selected NSCAA third team All-American and first team All-Pac 12. He also played 10 games in PDL with time split between Sounders U23 and Puget Sound. Ryan was drafted by FC Dallas 17th overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, the second keeper gone in the draft. Herman is 6’7” with an over seven feet wingspan which enticing for a keeper although despite his upside he was second keeper to a keep ½ foot shorter. There have been questions regarding his speed and despite his size can he dive quick enough to make a save to the far post. He also has a tendency to punch the ball then catch and plays to far in his net for someone of his size.

Herman was drafted 17th overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft and signed a MLS contract with FC Dallas
