ANALYSIS:

Chapman was signed to a Homegrown Contract prior to the 2015 MLS season, he played two years in the Toronto FC Academy from November 2010 until spring of 2012. When signed, Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko said “Jay is a technical player and has shown the ability to be a driving force in the centre of midfielder during his time at Michigan State. He fits into the direction we are heading in terms of style of play and will be an important part of our club.”

Chapman played three season with Michigan State, starting all 64 games he played in. He scored a total of 12 goals, including two headers and one from distance, provided nine assists and had 45 shots on target. He was also a key member of Michigan State national tournament runs in 2013 and 2014. During the summer Jay Chapman played with K-W United in the PDL, 1833 minutes in 25 games, scoring six goals and providing five assists.

Chapman is known as a box-to-box midfielder, although he has greater offensive assets then defence. He has good passing ability, but is willing to run at defenders and beating them on the dribble. Chapman has good height for a midfielder, however needs to get bigger and improve his strength. He is willing to tackle an opponent, although it can also get him in trouble when he doesn’t time his tackles correctly. Chapman can be a like-for-like replacement for Toronto FC senior player Jonathan Osorio, but is expected to also play games with TFC II in USL. If Chapman is able to play, become stronger and remain healthy, he could be a potential starter in MLS and an option for clubs in Europe as he qualifies for European Union passport.
