ANALYSIS:

There has been a lot of deserved hype regarding Todd Wharton for his exploits in his home state of Virginia. He attended Deep Run High School, winning the Gatorade Player of the Year award scoring 31 goals and 22 assists in 14 game as a senior and finishing his high school career with 70 goals and 52 assists. He also scored 43 goals in USSDA with the Richmond Strikers, 27 in 80 games at the U-16 level and 16 goals in 21 games at the U-18 level. Opposing coach Jim Dorton said of Wharton, “Wharton is a strong presence both in the midfield and in the attacking third, he is gifted with a great touch and speed. He is hard to match up against because he has the ability to break a game open on his own. He can and often does provide the winning threat that Deep Run needs to win matches.”

Wharton signed with University of Virginia, in three years with the Caviliers he has played in 66 games, starting 62 games, scoring nine goals and adding five assists. While not displaying the offensive output seen before university, he did help Virginia win the national championship in 2014, was named to the All-ACC Freshman team in 2012 and third team All-ACC in 2014. He also played PDL soccer with the Portland Timbers U23 during the summer of 2015 , scoring three goals in 12 games, adding an assist and winning PDL award honors.

Wharton has good natural talent and is a potential MLS player, even as a non-goal scorer in a deeper midfield role. However, if Todd can gain the touch he showed in USSDA and High School his value could rise and he be a top first round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. It will be interesting to see how he is used this season, especially if Darius Maddison is no longer on the team.
