ANALYSIS:

Son of former Haitian National Team player Derrick Etienne, who played in the United States for the Richmond Kickers and Long Island Rough Riders, Etienne was born in the United States and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. He signed with the New York Red Bulls Academy as a 13-year-old, played soccer at Passaic County Tech and made his debut with Haitian U-17 National Team in 2013.

Etienne played with the NY Red Bulls U-16 and U-18 USSDA team, playing in 86 games, scoring 39 goals and was voted to the 2014 NSCAA Youth All-America team. He committed to Virginia University for the 2015 school year, but played for Haiti in the U-20 CONCACAF Championship and the New York Red Bulls II during the 2015 USL season. He scored three goals and added three assists for the NYRB II team and speculation begin that he would sign a Homegrown contract oppose to attending school.

Etienne did attend Virginia for the 2015 NCAA Division 1 season, playing in 17 games, starting 10 games, scoring two goals, added an assist and qualified for the National Championship tournament, but did not make the impact that was expected. Derrick has great natural talent and has good acceleration, size, and ball playing skills. He was most impressive taking on players 1v1, but still needs greater awareness of play around him to be a complete player.
